Risperdal Consta (Risperidone) is a drug prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia and to treat bipolar disorder. Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals are the drug manufacturers and distributors. The antipsychotic drug is now believed to cause gynecomastia or the development of female breasts in young men and boys. The drug companies failed to warn consumers about the risks associated with taking the drug. They have now paid millions with pending lawsuits across the country.
Risperdal hit the market as early as 1993 and was approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults. In 2006, the drug was approved for pediatric use by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat symptoms related to autism. Prior to FDA approval many youth were prescribed Risperdal to combat ADHD. The US Department of Justice came down hard on Johnson & Johnson resulting in a $2.2 billion fine for the illegal marketing of the drug to treat hostility in elderly patients and those suffering from dementia despite increased risks of death.
